But it’s such an endless clever puzzle game that it could only exist as an indie title. I’m kind of cheating because it’s the first indie title I (knowingly) played, back when Xbox Live Arcade was a thing.Īt the time I thought of it as not really a ‘proper’ game and instantly regretted my purchase when I saw the simplistic graphics in action and realised it was going to have none of the bells and whistles of other, bigger budget games. I think my absolute favourite of recent generations though is Braid. It’s sad that some people arbitrarily won’t play indie games, because I think if you want something that isn’t a bloated, microtransaction-filled mess I think indie games are going to be where you have to look more and more going forward.Īlmost too many to choose from here, including personal faves such as Oxenfree, Death’s Door, Outer Wilds, and Hotline Miami. Worth a play for anyone that missed it first time round, a good fit for Dark Souls fans as it has a very firm but fair difficulty and some cool, obscure storytelling.Īs the industry trends further towards conglomeration, indie developers are going to be even more important as increasingly they are going to be the only people prepared to take a chance on making something new and interesting. One game I did play through again more recently though was Hyper Light Drifter and that is right up there as well – visuals and music excellent and the combat was really challenging and satisfying. I think the last time this topic came up a few years ago I said Divinity: Original Sin 2 and nothing has knocked that off its perch as my favourite indie game, it’s just so good. I think the important thing with indie games is not just that they allow developers to be more experimental but by having to keep things simple with the budget you get more of the spirit of early gaming.
